Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair

Recognizing the early warning signs of a heat pump problem can help prevent system failure and costly emergencies. If you live in Johnstown, CO, keep an eye out for any of the following indicators:

  1. Insufficient Heating or Cooling: The most obvious sign is when your heat pump struggles to maintain the desired temperature. Air might feel lukewarm when it should be hot or simply not cool enough.
  2. Strange Noises: Heat pumps typically operate quietly. Grinding, rattling, hissing, or buzzing sounds coming from either the indoor or outdoor unit can indicate a mechanical issue, a loose part, or a refrigerant leak.
  3. Frequent Cycling (Short Cycling): If your heat pump turns on and off repeatedly in short bursts, rather than completing a full heating or cooling cycle, it suggests a problem with the unit's capacity, a control issue, or potentially a refrigerant leak.
  4. Increased Energy Bills: A sudden or gradual spike in your electricity bills without a corresponding change in usage could mean your heat pump is losing efficiency and working harder than it should to heat or cool your home.
  5. Ice Buildup on the Outdoor Unit: While some frost is normal in cold weather, significant ice buildup on the outdoor coil or other components indicates a problem, often related to the defrost cycle or airflow issues.
  6. Poor Airflow: Weak airflow from your vents can point to problems with the indoor fan, ductwork, or clogged filters.
  7. System Not Turning On: If your heat pump fails to activate when the thermostat calls for heating or cooling, there could be an electrical issue, thermostat problem, or a major component failure.
    1. Refrigerant Leaks: Low refrigerant levels can severely impact heating and cooling capacity and damage the compressor. Leaks are often caused by wear and tear on coils or line sets.
    2. Faulty Reversing Valve: This valve is crucial for switching the heat pump between heating and cooling modes. If it fails, the unit may get stuck in one mode or produce no conditioned air at all.
    3. Compressor Issues: The compressor is the heart of the heat pump. Problems can range from electrical faults to mechanical failure, resulting in poor performance or the unit not running.
    4. Fan Motor Problems: Issues with the indoor or outdoor fan motors can lead to insufficient airflow, overheating, or unusual noises.
    5. Blocked Coils: Dirty indoor evaporator coils or outdoor condenser coils restrict airflow and heat exchange, reducing efficiency and potentially causing the unit to freeze up.
    6. Defrost Cycle Malfunctions: In cold weather, the outdoor unit will accumulate frost. The defrost cycle is designed to melt this ice. If it fails, ice can build up excessively, impeding operation. This is a critical function for heat pumps in Johnstown's winter climate.
    7. Issues with Supplemental Heat: Many heat pumps use auxiliary electric resistance heating in very cold temperatures. Problems with the auxiliary heat strips or the system's ability to switch to them can leave your home cold when the heat pump alone isn't sufficient.
    8. Thermostat Problems: A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to incorrect temperature readings, improper cycling, or the system not responding to commands.
      1. Check the Thermostat: Ensure the thermostat is set correctly to the desired mode (Heat/Cool) and temperature. Replace batteries if it's a battery-powered model.
      2. Check the Power: Verify that the breaker for the heat pump (indoor and outdoor units) hasn't tripped in your electrical panel.
      3. Check Air Filters: A clogged air filter restricts airflow and can cause various problems. Check and replace the filter if it's dirty.
      4. Inspect the Outdoor Unit: Clear away any debris like leaves, grass clippings, or snow that might be blocking airflow around the outdoor unit. Ensure there's adequate clearance. Do not attempt to chip ice off the unit.
      5. Check Vents: Make sure all vents inside your home are open and not blocked by furniture or drapes.
        1. Initial Assessment: A certified technician will arrive at your home to evaluate the heat pump system. They will listen to your description of the problem and perform a thorough inspection of both the indoor and outdoor units.
        2. Diagnosis: Using specialized tools and their expertise, the technician will diagnose the root cause of the malfunction. This involves checking electrical components, refrigerant levels and pressure, coils, motors, valves, and the thermostat.
        3. Explanation and Recommendations: Once the issue is identified, the technician will explain the problem to you clearly, discuss the necessary repairs, and provide options if applicable.
        4. Repair: With your approval, the technician will proceed with the repair using quality parts. They will carefully perform the work to restore your system's function.
        5. Testing: After the repair is complete, the technician will test the system thoroughly in both heating and cooling modes (if applicable) to ensure it is operating correctly and efficiently.
        6. Cleanup: The work area will be cleaned up, leaving your home tidy.
        7. Final Review: The technician will review the work done, answer any questions you have, and offer tips for maintaining your system's performance.
          1. Nature and Complexity of the Issue: Simple fixes like replacing a capacitor or thermostat cost less than major repairs involving the compressor, coils, or extensive refrigerant leak detection and sealing.
          2. Required Parts: The cost will depend on which parts need to be replaced. Major components like the compressor or fan motor are significantly more expensive than smaller electrical components or sensors.
          3. Labor Time: More complex problems or those requiring extensive troubleshooting will naturally take longer to repair, affecting the labor cost.
          4. System Age and Type: Older or less common heat pump models may have parts that are harder to source, potentially increasing the cost.
          5. Emergency Service Needs: Repairs needed outside of standard business hours may incur additional fees.
          6. At HALO Heating and Air, we believe in transparent communication and will provide a clear explanation of the repair needed and the associated costs before work begins. We also offer Financing options to help manage unexpected repair expenses.

Steve, the HALO technician, was great. He did a quick view of our furnace and could see it was malfunctioning. He was very transparent, showing me his initial findings, explaining how the furnace should work and trying a step to correct the problem. When that didn't work, he inspected the wiring more closely and found a crimped wire leading into the burner assembly. He replaced the wire and the furnace resumed normal operation. Thanks much, Steve!

I’m am so impressed with the quality and depth of service that I received. The details about what was being done and how the system works were so helpful to me and the most valuable as I know how to help diagnose my own system.
They tested everything and were able to diagnose my problems and get them fixed. This was after two other companies had tried to do this and failed
I would recommend them again to everyone who wanted expertise and high level skills and knowledge who will get the problem resolved.

Steve and Chernet literally saved our kennel dogs and puppies by repairing a heating system that was not designed to function in negative temperatures. They came up with a plan to keep the temperatures warm and monitored them throughout the night!! They did that! And did it all for an extremely fair price. We have had several other HVAC companies come to our business to“fix” our system. Nobody had ever been honest with us, and kept charging more and more each visit leaving us with a system that really was not designed to work properly. We will never use another HVAC company again. Halo has our business for life!!
